節と節をつなぐandやbutの前にはカンマを入れるのが通例ですが、次のような短い文の場合は入れなくてもかまいません。
○ The memo wasn’t sent, and he hasn’t been contacted.
○ The memo wasn’t sent and he hasn’t been contacted.
しかし、andやbutに続く節が、前の節の主語を流用する場合は、カンマを入れません。
× We checked all the boxes, but couldn’t find the manual.
○ We checked all the boxes but couldn’t find the manual.
